Ask any Shiva devotee what their favourite month of the year is, and most will say Shravan without a second thought. The rains arrive, the temples fill up, and for one full month, everything else takes a back seat to Mahadev.

This guide gives you the exact Shrava      n Maas 2026 dates, the Somvar Vrat list, the story behind why this month belongs to Shiva, and the puja vidhi devotees have followed for generations. When Does Shravan 2026 Begin and End

North India and South India do not celebrate Shravan on the same dates. This confuses a lot of people every year, so let’s clear it up first.

In Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, Shravan Maas 2026 runs from 30 July to 28 August 2026. These states follow the Purnimanta calendar, where a month ends on the full moon.

In Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Goa, the month runs from 13 August to 11 September 2026. These states follow the Amavasyant calendar instead, where the month ends on the new moon.

Neither calendar is wrong. They just count the month differently. The moon phases, the tithis, stay the same across India. At Vedaangam, our pandits and temple tie-ups follow the Purnimanta system used in Kashi, so that is what we go by through this guide.

Sawan Somvar 2026: Full Dates List

Every Monday in Shravan is called a Shravan Somvar. It’s the one day of the week when even people who don’t usually fast will keep an upvas and visit a Shiva temple.

North India gets four Shravan Somvars this year:

The third Somvar, 17 August, also happens to be Nag Panchami this year. Shiva wears serpents around his neck, so this overlap makes that particular Monday extra special for his devotees.

Maharashtra and Gujarat get their four Somvars on 17, 24, 31 August and 7 September.

These four Mondays are also the busiest days for Rudrabhishek bookings across all our Jyotirlinga pujas. If you want to book one in your family’s name, do it early. The Scriptural Significance of Shravan Maas

Why does one whole month belong to Shiva? The answer goes back to one of the oldest stories in our shastras, the Samudra Manthan.

The Story of Neelkanth, from Shivmahapuran

Shivmahapuran tells us that the Devas and Asuras once churned the ocean of milk together, using Mount Mandara as the rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. They were after Amrit, the nectar of immortality. But before Amrit came out, the ocean gave up something far more dangerous first: Halahal, a poison strong enough to destroy all three worlds.

Everyone panicked. Nobody, Deva or Asura, could stand near it. Shiva stepped in. He took the poison in his hands and swallowed it, but held it back in his throat instead of letting it go further. His throat turned blue from the burn, and that is how he became Neelkanth.

The Devas rushed to pour Ganga jal over him to cool the heat. This happened during Shravan. That is the whole reason Jalabhishek and Rudrabhishek, pouring water and other sacred substances over the Shivling, are considered the strongest form of worship in this month. When you do Abhishek in Shravan, you’re really repeating what the Devas did for Shiva after he saved the universe.

Parvati’s Penance, from Skanda Purana

The second story is Parvati’s. In her earlier life as Sati, she gave up her life after her father Daksha insulted Shiva publicly. She was reborn as Parvati, daughter of Himalaya, and her love for Shiva did not go anywhere.

This time she wanted to earn him, not have him arranged for her. So she did tapasya through Shravan, eating little, sitting through the rain and the heat, thinking only of Shiva. He was moved, and he accepted her.

This is why unmarried women keep the Shravan Somvar Vrat, praying for a husband like Shiva, and married women keep it praying for their husband’s long life. Some go further and keep all sixteen Mondays, the Solah Somvar Vrat.

The Jyotirlingas and Their Shravan Puja Traditions

Kashi Vishwanath, Varanasi

Nowhere feels like Kashi in Shravan. The ghats fill with Har Har Mahadev from morning to night. Two rituals stand out here. Rudrabhishek, where the Shivling gets bathed in Gangajal, milk, honey, curd and Bilva leaves while Rudra mantras are chanted. And Bilva Archana, where Bilva leaves are offered one by one while your sankalp is read out. Kedarnath, Uttarakhand

Kedarnath sits high in the Himalayas and is both a Jyotirlinga and one of the Char Dhams. Its Shravan Rudrabhishek is done by the temple’s own priests. There is also Neelkamal Archana, where 108 blue lotus flowers, a flower Shiva is said to love, get offered one at a time while all 108 of his names are chanted. Given how hard the yatra is during monsoon, most devotees now do this puja online through Vedaangam instead of travelling.

Trimbakeshwar, Nashik

Trimbakeshwar has something no other Jyotirlinga has: three faces in one lingam, for Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It’s also where the Godavari begins. Rudrabhishek here is especially known for Kaal Sarp Dosh remedies. If something has felt stuck for a long time, career, marriage, health, this is the Jyotirlinga most devotees choose first.

Mahakaleshwar, Ujjain

Mahakaleshwar is the only Jyotirlinga that faces south, and it’s famous for its Bhasma Aarti at dawn. Its Shravan Rudrabhishek follows the same strict Vedic method that has run here for centuries. Devotees often pick Mahakal specifically when they want to overcome fear, since he is worshipped here as the very form of time and death.

How to Perform the Shravan Somvar Vrat at Home

Here’s how the vrat is done at home, the way it’s been passed down for generations.

Wake up before sunrise if you can, and bathe. Wear something simple, nothing loud, Shravan is not the month for that. Clean your puja space and set up your Shivling or a photo of Shiva with a small vessel of water nearby.

Take a sankalp first. Say your name, your gotra, and what you’re doing this vrat for. Skip this step and the vrat is considered incomplete, so don’t rush past it.

Start the Abhishek. Pour water slowly, then milk, honey, curd, ghee and sugar if you have them. Offer Bilva Patra, whole leaves only, not broken ones, along with white flowers like Datura or Aak. Shiva accepts these even when nothing else is available.

Chant Om Namah Shivaya through the puja. If you have time, add the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, at least eleven times. Finish with an aarti. If you’re fasting, break it after sunset or after your evening puja, whichever your family follows. Fruits, sabudana, milk products and rock salt are fine during the fast. Grains, onion, garlic and non-veg are not.

What to Do and What to Avoid During Shravan

Shravan asks you to hold back a little, and that restraint is part of the practice, not a side rule.

Skip non-veg, alcohol, onion and garlic through the month. Many families skip leafy greens too, since the monsoon makes them harder to digest safely. Raw milk usually stays off the table as well, it’s kept aside for Shiva instead.

On the other side, this is a good month to chant Om Namah Shivaya daily, visit a Shiva temple on Mondays, and keep your food and routine simple. Married women in North India also keep Mangala Gauri Vrat on Tuesdays, falling this year on 4, 11, 18 and 25 August, praying for their husband’s wellbeing.

सोलह सोमवार व्रत का महत्व और उद्देश्य

सोलह सोमवार व्रत भगवान शिव की कृपा प्राप्ति हेतु किया जाने वाला अत्यंत प्रभावशाली व्रत है। यह धारणा गलत है कि यह केवल विवाहित स्त्रियों द्वारा अच्छे वर की प्राप्ति हेतु किया जाता है। इस व्रत को माता पार्वती ने शिवजी को पुनः प्राप्त करने हेतु किया, वहीं पुजारी ने अपने कोढ़ के रोग से मुक्ति के लिए, कार्तिकेय ने मित्र मिलन के लिए, ब्राह्मण ने विवाह के लिए, और राजकुमारी ने पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिए यह व्रत किया।

इन सभी उदाहरणों से स्पष्ट है कि सोलह सोमवार व्रत किसी भी शुभ इच्छा की पूर्ति हेतु किया जा सकता है – जैसे पुत्र प्राप्ति, रोग निवारण, समृद्धि, गृहस्थ सुख, मानसिक शांति आदि। यह व्रत स्त्री या पुरुष, विवाहित या अविवाहित – सभी के लिए फलदायक है।

व्रत कब और कैसे करें

सोलह सोमवार व्रत श्रावण मास के किसी भी सोमवार से आरंभ किया जा सकता है। यदि पहला सोमवार न मिल सके तो दूसरे या तीसरे सोमवार से भी प्रारंभ करना उचित है। एक बार प्रारंभ करने के बाद 16 सोमवार तक नियमित व्रत करना चाहिए, और 17वें सोमवार को विधिपूर्वक उद्यापन करना चाहिए।

सोलह सोमवार व्रत पूजा विधि (Solah Somwar Vrat Vidhi)

पूजन सामग्री:

• शिवलिंग या शिवजी की मूर्ति
• बेलपत्र, धतूरा, भांग
• सफेद पुष्प
• सफेद वस्त्र, जनेऊ
• गंगाजल, शुद्ध जल, दूध, दही, घी, शहद, चीनी (पंचामृत हेतु)
• सफेद चंदन, अष्टगंध, रोली, इत्र
• धूप, दीप, कपूर

व्रत का संकल्प विधि:

स्नान के पश्चात शुद्ध वस्त्र धारण कर पूजा स्थल पर बैठें। हाथ में जल, अक्षत, सुपारी, पान, और दक्षिणा लेकर संकल्प करें:

संकल्प मंत्र:
ॐ विष्णुर्विष्णुर्विष्णुः। श्रीमद्भगवतो महापुरुषस्य विष्णोराज्ञया प्रवर्तमानस्याद्य ब्रह्मणः द्वितीयपरार्धे श्रीश्वेतवाराहकल्पे वैवस्वतमन्वन्तरे कलीयुगे प्रथमचरणे जम्बूद्वीपे भारतवर्षे भरतखण्डे आर्यावर्तान्तर्गत पुण्यप्रदेशे अमुकगोत्रोत्पन्नः अमुकनाम अहं शिवप्रसादसिद्ध्यर्थं सोलह सोमवार व्रतं अहम करिष्ये।

यहाँ “अमुक” स्थानों पर स्थान, गोत्र, नाम आदि उच्चारण करें।

आवाहन एवं पूजन विधि:

1. आसन पर पूर्व या उत्तर दिशा की ओर मुख करके बैठें।
2. हाथ में अक्षत और पुष्प लेकर भगवान शिव का आवाहन करें:

आवाहन मंत्र:
ॐ शिवशङ्करमीशानं त्रिनेत्रं पंचवक्त्रकम् ।
उमासहितं देवं शिवं आवाहयाम्यहम् ॥

3. शिवलिंग या मूर्ति पर जल एवं पंचामृत से अभिषेक करें।
4. फिर शुद्ध जल से स्नान कराएं और वस्त्र अर्पित करें।
5. चंदन से तिलक करें, फिर अक्षत, पुष्प, बेलपत्र, धतूरा, भांग अर्पण करें।
6. धूप, दीप दिखाएं, नैवेद्य अर्पित करें।
7. शिव चालीसा, शिव महिम्न स्तोत्र, महामृत्युंजय मंत्र या ॐ नमः शिवाय का जप करें।
8. आरती करें – दीप और कपूर से।

प्रदोषकाल में विशेष पूजन करना शुभ माना गया है। पूजा के बाद पंजीरी को तीन भागों में बाँटें:

• एक भाग भगवान शिव को अर्पित करें
• दो भागों को प्रसाद रूप में वितरित करें और स्वयं भी ग्रहण करें।

सोलह सोमवार व्रत की कथा

एक बार शिवजी और माता पार्वती मृत्यु लोक पर घूम रहे थे। घूमते-घूमते वो विदर्भ देश के अमरावती नामक नगर में आये। उस नगर में एक सुंदर शिव मन्दिर था, इसलिए महादेवजी पार्वतीजी के साथ वहाँ रहने लग गये।

एक दिन बातों-बातों में पार्वतीजी ने शिवजी को चौसर खेलने को कहा। शिवजी राजी हो गये और चौसर खेलने लग गये।

उसी समय मंदिर का पुजारी दैनिक आरती के लिए आया। पार्वती ने पुजारी से पूछा, बताओ हम दोनों में चौसर में कौन जीतेगा? वो पुजारी भगवान शिव का भक्त था और उसके मुंह से तुरन्त निकल पड़ा, “महादेव जी जीतेंगे।”

चौसर का खेल खत्म होने पर पार्वती जी जीत गयीं और शिवजी हार गये। पार्वती जी ने क्रोधित होकर उस पुजारी को श्राप देना चाहा। तभी शिवजी ने उन्हें रोक दिया और कहा कि यह तो भाग्य का खेल है, उसकी कोई गलती नहीं है। फिर भी माता पार्वती ने उसे कोढ़ी होने का श्राप दे दिया और उसे कोढ़ हो गया।

काफी समय तक वह कोढ़ से पीड़ित रहा। एक दिन एक अप्सरा उस मंदिर में शिवजी की आराधना के लिए आयी और उसने उस पुजारी के कोढ़ को देखा। अप्सरा ने उस पुजारी को कोढ़ का कारण पूछा तो उसने सारी घटना उसे सुना दी। अप्सरा ने उस पुजारी से कहा, तुम्हें इस कोढ़ से मुक्ति पाने के लिए सोलह सोमवार व्रत करना चाहिए। उस पुजारी ने व्रत करने की विधि पूछी।

अप्सरा ने बताया, सोमवार के दिन नहा धोकर साफ़ कपड़े पहन लेना और आधा किलो आटे से पंजीरी बना देना। उस पंजीरी के तीन भाग करना। प्रदोष काल में भगवान शिव की आराधना करना। इस पंजीरी के एक तिहाई हिस्से को आरती में आने वाले लोगों को प्रसाद के रूप में देना। इस तरह सोलह सोमवार तक यही विधि अपनाना। सत्रहवें सोमवार को एक चौथाई गेहूं के आटे से चूरमा बना देना और शिवजी को अर्पित कर लोगों में बांट देना। इससे तुम्हारा कोढ़ दूर हो जायेगा।

इस तरह सोलह सोमवार व्रत करने से उसका कोढ़ दूर हो गया और वह खुशी-खुशी रहने लगा।

एक दिन शिवजी और पार्वती जी दुबारा उस मंदिर में लौटे और उस पुजारी को एकदम स्वस्थ देखा। पार्वती जी ने उस पुजारी से स्वास्थ्य लाभ होने का राज पूछा। उस पुजारी ने कहा उसने 16 सोमवार व्रत किए जिससे उसका कोढ़ दूर हो गया। पार्वती जी इस व्रत के बारे में सुनकर बहुत प्रसन्न हुईं। उन्होंने भी यह व्रत किया और इससे उनका पुत्र वापस घर लौट आया और आज्ञाकारी बन गया।

कार्तिकेय ने अपनी माता से उनके मानसिक परिवर्तन का कारण पूछा जिससे वह वापस घर लौट आये। पार्वती ने उन्हें इन सब के पीछे सोलह सोमवार व्रत के बारे में बताया। कार्तिकेय यह सुनकर बहुत खुश हुए।

कार्तिकेय ने अपने विदेश गये ब्राह्मण मित्र से मिलने के लिए उस व्रत को किया और सोलह सोमवार होने पर उनका मित्र उनसे मिलने विदेश से वापस लौट आया। उनके मित्र ने इस राज का कारण पूछा तो कार्तिकेय ने सोलह सोमवार व्रत की महिमा बताई।

यह सुनकर उस ब्राह्मण मित्र ने भी विवाह के लिए सोलह सोमवार व्रत रखने के लिए विचार किया। एक दिन राजा अपनी पुत्री के विवाह की तैयारियाँ कर रहा था। कई राजकुमार राजा की पुत्री से विवाह करने के लिए आये। राजा ने एक शर्त रखी कि जिस भी व्यक्ति के गले में हथिनी वरमाला डालेगी, उसके साथ ही उसकी पुत्री का विवाह होगा।

वो ब्राह्मण भी वहीं था और भाग्य से उस हथिनी ने उस ब्राह्मण के गले में वरमाला डाल दी और शर्त के अनुसार राजा ने उस ब्राह्मण से अपनी पुत्री का विवाह करा दिया।

एक दिन राजकुमारी ने ब्राह्मण से पूछा, आपने ऐसा क्या पुण्य किया जो हथिनी ने दुसरे सभी राजकुमारों को छोड़कर आपके गले में वरमाला डाली?” उसने कहा, “प्रिये, मैंने अपने मित्र कार्तिकेय के कहने पर सोलह सोमवार व्रत किए थे, उसी के परिणामस्वरूप तुम लक्ष्मी जैसी दुल्हन मुझे मिली।

राजकुमारी यह सुनकर बहुत प्रभावित हुई और उसने भी पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिए सोलह सोमवार व्रत रखा। फलस्वरूप उसके एक सुंदर पुत्र का जन्म हुआ। जब पुत्र बड़ा हुआ तो उसने पूछा, माँ, आपने ऐसा क्या किया जो आपको मेरे जैसा पुत्र मिला? उसने भी पुत्र को सोलह सोमवार व्रत की महिमा बतायी।

यह सुनकर उसने भी राजपाट की इच्छा के लिए यह व्रत रखा। उसी समय एक राजा अपनी पुत्री के विवाह के लिए वर तलाश कर रहा था। तो लोगों ने उस बालक को विवाह के लिए उचित बताया। राजा को इसकी सूचना मिलते ही उसने अपनी पुत्री का विवाह उस बालक के साथ कर दिया। कुछ सालों बाद जब राजा की मृत्यु हुई तो वह राजा बन गया क्योंकि उस राजा के कोई पुत्र नहीं था।

राजपाट मिलने के बाद भी वह सोमवार व्रत करता रहा। एक दिन सत्रहवें सोमवार व्रत पर उसकी पत्नी को भी पूजा के लिए शिव मंदिर आने को कहा लेकिन उसने खुद आने के बजाय दासी को भेज दिया।

ब्राह्मण पुत्र के पूजा खत्म होने के बाद आकाशवाणी हुई, तुम अपनी पत्नी को अपने महल से दूर रखो, वरना तुम्हारा विनाश हो जाएगा। ब्राह्मण पुत्र यह सुनकर बहुत आश्चर्यचकित हुआ।

महल वापस लौटने पर उसने अपने दरबारियों को भी यह बात बताई। तो दरबारियों ने कहा कि जिसकी वजह से ही उसे राजपाट मिला है, वह उसी को महल से बाहर निकालेगा? लेकिन उस ब्राह्मण पुत्र ने उसे महल से बाहर निकाल दिया।

वह राजकुमारी भूखी-प्यासी एक अनजान नगर में आयी। वहाँ पर एक बूढ़ी औरत धागा बेचने बाजार जा रही थी। जैसे ही उसने राजकुमारी को देखा तो उसने उसकी मदद करते हुए उसके साथ व्यापार में मदद करने को कहा। राजकुमारी ने भी एक टोकरी अपने सिर पर रख ली। कुछ दूरी पर चलने के बाद एक तूफान आया और वह टोकरी उड़कर चली गयी। अब वह बूढ़ी औरत रोने लग गई और उसने राजकुमारी को मनहूस मानते हुए चले जाने को कहा।

उसके बाद वह एक तेली के घर पहुंची। उसके वहाँ पहुंचते ही सारे तेल के घड़े फूट गये और तेल बहने लग गया। उस तेली ने भी उसे मनहूस मानकर वहाँ से भगा दिया। उसके बाद वह एक सुंदर तालाब के पास पहुंची और जैसे ही पानी पीने लगी उस पानी में कीड़े चलने लगे और सारा पानी धुंधला हो गया।

अपने दुर्भाग्य को कोसते हुए उसने गंदा पानी पी लिया और पेड़ के नीचे सो गयी। जैसे ही वह पेड़ के नीचे सोयी, उस पेड़ की सारी पत्तियाँ झड़ गईं। अब वह जिस पेड़ के पास जाती, उसकी पत्तियाँ गिर जाती थीं।

ऐसा देखकर वहाँ के लोग मंदिर के पुजारी के पास गये। उस पुजारी ने उस राजकुमारी का दर्द समझते हुए उससे कहा, बेटी, तुम मेरे परिवार के साथ रहो। मैं तुम्हें अपनी बेटी की तरह रखूंगा, तुम्हें मेरे आश्रम में कोई तकलीफ नहीं होगी।

इस तरह वह आश्रम में रहने लग गई। अब वह जो भी खाना बनाती या पानी लाती, उसमें कीड़े पड़ जाते। ऐसा देखकर वह पुजारी आश्चर्यचकित होकर उससे बोला, बेटी, तुम पर ये कैसा कोप है जो तुम्हारी ऐसी हालत है?

उसने वही शिवपूजा में ना जाने वाली कहानी सुनाई। उस पुजारी ने शिवजी की आराधना की और उसको सोलह सोमवार व्रत करने को कहा जिससे उसे ज़रूर राहत मिलेगी।

उसने सोलह सोमवार व्रत किया और सत्रहवें सोमवार पर ब्राह्मण पुत्र उसके बारे में सोचने लगा, वह कहाँ होगी, मुझे उसकी तलाश करनी चाहिए। इसलिए उसने अपने आदमी भेजकर अपनी पत्नी को ढूंढने को कहा।

उसके आदमी ढूंढते-ढूंढते उस पुजारी के घर पहुँच गये और उन्हें वहाँ राजकुमारी का पता चल गया। उन्होंने पुजारी से राजकुमारी को घर ले जाने को कहा, लेकिन पुजारी ने मना करते हुए कहा, अपने राजा को कहो कि खुद आकर इसे ले जाए।

राजा खुद वहाँ पर आया और राजकुमारी को वापस अपने महल लेकर आया।
